The St Sixtus abbey of Westvleteren dates from 1830 and produces its own beers since 1838. Afthe World War II, the Abbot Dom Gerardus decided to brew only beer for their own use and for the pub " De Vrede " (The Peace) across the street. In this way, the monks'prayers would not be disturbed. However, they granted the nearby St Bernardus brewery a licence to commercialize three of the Sixtus Abbey beers. This licence was prolonged in 1962 and ended in 1992. The non-pasteurized trappist beers are available in limited quantities only at the abbey gate. It is not possible to visit the abbey and the brewery.
