The most popular trappist beers in the Flanders are without any doubt the ones brewed in Westmalle, where the largest trappist brewery of the whole country is located. The Westmalle abbey dates from 1804 and started brewing beer in 1836. In 1870, the first engraved bottles were introduced to finance the missionary work in congo. In 1934, the brewery was completely renewed. Now two types of beer are commercialized : the dark Dubbel and the golden Tripel. The sweet, pale Extra is intended for consumption within the walls only.
